Sir Mark gave very clear answers re Māori Carbon Forestry.  A carbon-trading business seeking to unlock millions of dollars from communal Māori land is launching today in a scheme which will provide the Government's Billion Trees plan a massive boost.

Donna Awatere Huata secures top job as Māori Climate Commissioner

Disgraced former MP Donna Awatere Huata has secured a top job advising Māori on climate change. Awatere Huata was on Monday appointed Māori Climate Commissioner by the Sir Mark Solomon-led Māori Carbon Foundation, a private carbon trading business which plants forests on communal Māori land.

Māori perspective to the government has been established.

A new independent body that will give advice about climate change from a Māori perspective to the government has been established. The chair of the Māori Carbon Foundation, Sir Mark Solomon, has announced the establishment of the office of the Māori Climate Commissioner. He was also pleased to announce that the inaugural Māori Climate Commissioner would be Donna Awatere Huata of Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Hine and Ngāpuhi descent. The new office will provide Māori-focused research and advice that will contribute to Aotearoa meeting its obligations under the 2015 Paris Agreement on greenhouse gas emissions.

An Emissions Trading Scheme fit for purpose

Forestry Minister Shane Jones and Minister for Climate Change James Shaw have today opened consultation on improvements to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS); New Zealand’s main tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ETS encourages businesses to reduce their emissions by putting a price on them. The fewer emissions they create, the fewer ETS units they have to pay for.
